“…The recoveries of 13C1rlabeled internal standards ranged from 70 to 110%. The recoveries achieved in these analyses were significantly better than those reported in previous analyses of Newark Bay sediments (Tong et al, 1990). Detection limits ranged from 1.2 to 5.3 ng/kg for the individual 2, 3, 7, 8-substituted PCDD/F residues.…”

“…Previous studies ofthis estuary have shown that polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are present in the soils of several industrial sites along the lower Passaic River (NJDEP, 1989), as well as in sediments and aquatic biota collected from Newark Bay and the New York Bight (Belton et al, 1985;Bopp, 1988;Rappe et aI., 1989aRappe et aI., , 1991Rubinstein et aI., 1990;Tong et al, 1990;Bopp et I To whom correspondence should be addressed.…”

“…Similar regional spatial and temporal patterns were noted by Chaky (2003) for the 1960s and 1995 periods using age-dated cores from Newark Bay and throughout the New York/New Jersey (NY/NJ) Harbor Estuary. Chaky (2003) further noted a similar spatial pattern in the ratio of 2,3,7,8-TCDD to total TCDD, a "fingerprint" suggested by Tong et al (1990) and Bopp (1992), which is known to be characteristically high for waste associated with the 2,4,5-T manufacturing process used at the Lister Avenue site. Soil samples collected in the vicinity of the Lister Avenue site exhibited ratios in the range of 0.86-0.98 (Umbreit et al 1986;Wenning et al 1993a), and LPR sediments typically exhibit a ratio above 0.6 at the 2,3,7,8-TCDD peak depth [Chaky (2003) measured 0.71 and 0.86 in Newark Bay, and more recent LPR data are discussed below].…”

“…For example, Bopp et al (1991) notes that octachlorodibenzodioxin (OCDD) is by far the more abundant dioxin in Newark Bay and Bopp et al (1998) suggest an atmospheric signal based on regional patterns. Rather, Tong et al (1990), Bopp (1992), and Chaky (2003) noted that the Lister Avenue site source was characterized by a high fraction of 2,3,7,8-TCDD relative to the total TCDD concentration, and hence the characteristic fingerprint used by Chaky (2003).…”
