Analysis of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer Systems Based on Behavioral Modeling of Mutual Inductance

Abstract: This paper proposes a system-level approach suitable to analyze the performance of a dynamic Wireless Power Transfer System (WPTS) for electric vehicles, accounting for the uncertainty in the vehicle trajectory. The key-point of the approach is the use of an analytical behavioral model that relates mutual inductance between the coil pair to their relative positions along the actual vehicle trajectory. The behavioral model is derived from a limited training data set of simulations, by using a multi-objective ge… Show more

“…This result is helpful in the case of scalable systems, where the designer can take the advantage of FEM simulations or experimental measurements executed on a small-size coil pair. Similarly, in [17] an analytical behavioral model for describing the mutual inductance between coupled coils in dynamic IPT systems is presented. The model is able to provide the variation of such a parameter assuming different trajectories of the vehicle.…”

“…Nowadays, dynamic WPTSs are an emerging method to charge a battery while a vehicle runs over suitable roads equipped with a set of transmitting coils under the ground [11,12]. In this case, depending on the car position, the Rx coil could be aligned, partially aligned, or misaligned with respect to the Tx one [13][14][15][16]. Then, it is important to investigate the variation in the mutual inductance considering different displacements from the fully aligned condition [13,17].…”

“…the size of the coils with their ferrite and the effect of the shield layer facing the coil frame has been largely studied by different research groups (Cruciani et al , 2020a; Kindl et al , 2020; “SAE J 2954 Wireless Power Transfer for Light-Duty Plug-in/Electric Vehicles and Alignment Methodology”, 2021; Li and Mi, 2015; Tan et al , 2019; Yakala et al , 2021). Recently, to recharge moving vehicles, the dynamic wireless recharge has been of great interest (Ahmad et al , 2018; Cruciani et al , 2020b; Di Capua et al , 2021a, 2021b). However, in those papers, the analysis of WPTS is done by means of analytical models or, when a FE model is considered, either the car frame or the aluminum layer are not considered.…”
