Analysis of Fatigue of Paving Mixtures From the Fracture Mechanics Viewpoint

Abstract: The paper discusses application of fracture mechanics to the analysis of fatigue characteristics of paving mixtures. A method of determination of crack growth parameters for asphaltic beams resting on elastic foundation is presented. The finite element method of analysis is used for the determination of stress intensity factors for various crack sizes. The effect of material characteristics, foundation modulus, and mode of loading on the crack growth process of asphaltic mixtures, is discussed. The effect of a… Show more

“…The first studies started by Majidzadeh et al [2] with the application of the fracture mechanics in the analysis of pavement fatigue where the fatigue life of paving mixtures in terms of material constants, geometry, boundary conditions, and the state of stress is predicted. In that work, fatigue is defined in terms of crack initiation, influence on crack growth, and critical stress intensity at the critical failure point.…”

“…Distress resulting from HMA pavement fatigue (alligator cracking) has been a well-recognized problem in the United States since 1948 (2). Several researchers have investigated the fatigue characteristics of asphalt paving mixtures and their use in pavement design (3)(4)(5)(6). A thorough investigation was conducted during the Strategic Highway Research Program when several accelerated performance tests for assessment of fatigue response were evaluated (7 ).…”
