Analysis of Flight Variability: a Systematic Approach

Abstract: In movement data analysis, there exists a problem of comparing multiple trajectories of moving objects to common or distinct reference trajectories. We introduce a general conceptual framework for comparative analysis of trajectories and an analytical procedure, which consists of (1) finding corresponding points in pairs of trajectories, (2) computation of pairwise difference measures, and (3) interactive visual analysis of the distributions of the differences with respect to space, time, set of moving objects… Show more

“…It may be useful to treat selected pairs of numeric attributes as coordinates in an abstract space [47]. A polar coordinate system may be used in such a space if the movement directions or cyclic time attributes are involved [48]. Research on group movement [49] introduces the idea of a group space consisting of relative positions in respect to a central trajectory of the group.…”

“…The space-time cube (STC) [35] enables fast indexing and access by dividing the space-time space into uniformly sampled grids. Extended variants of the STC (e.g., Nanocubes [43]) are widely employed for supporting multivariate spatial-temporal data exploration [40,53], aggregation [3,11], and interactive analysis [6,8,39]. KNN-based queries refer to retrieving top K trajectories which have the minimum distance to given locations.…”

“…Rational evaluation methods use deductive reasoning by relying on logically true premises. For example, the analysis of algorithms complexity as reported in [3,44] is rational. This method is used to evaluate the efficiency of an algorithm by determining the time required to execute its instructions.…”
