Analysis of forces and temperatures in friction spot stir welding of thermoplastic polymers

Abstract: The present investigation analyses the force and torque developing during friction stir spot welding (FSSW) of thermoplastic sheets varying the main process parameters. In addition, measurements of the tool temperature and those of the material close to the welding region were carried out to better understand the variation of the forces during FSSW and quality of the joints. Experimental tests involving an instrumented drilling machine were performed on polycarbonate sheets. The study involved the variation of… Show more

“…Although some thermoplastic polymers have been treated using this method (Gan et al 2010;Prasad and Raghava 2012), some concerns relating to macromolecular chain breaking are raised as a result of tool pin rotation (Gan et al 2010). Squeeze-out of plasticized or semi-molten polymer is also the main concern regarding the friction stir welding (FSW) or FSP of the polymeric materials (Paoletti et al 2016). In view of this, pinless tool is the most appropriate technique to prevent squeeze out of material (Costa et al 2014).…”

“…The other processing parameters such as plunging speed (v f = 8 mm/min), preheating time (T p = 7 s), stirring time (T D = 21 s), waiting time (T W = 21 s), and tool rotational speed (n = 1260 rpm) were kept constant at optimal values found in a previous work [34]. In the study, the optimization of the process conditions was performed on a tool having d = 5 mm, D = 11 mm, and α = 0°that is very close to the geometry of punch 1.…”

“…Friction stir spot welding uses a rotating punch to heat up the joining partners. This process can be divided in the typical phases preheating, joining, consolidation, waiting and tool retraction [16,17]. Infrared welding is a welding technology that uses an infrared (IR) emitter to heat up the samples.…”
