Analysis of herpesvirus genomes in Kikuchi's disease

Abstract: We examined the cervical lymph nodes of 30 patients with Kikuchi's disease and 15 patients with nonspecific lymphadenitis, using Southern blot analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify human herpesviruses such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and varicella-zoster virus. By Southern blot analysis, no virus DNA was recognized, but 16 of the 30 nodes from patients with Kikuchi's disease and 8 of the 15 nodes from patients with non-specific lymphadenitis showed amp… Show more

“…İnfeksiyöz ajanlara karşı T hücre ve histiyosit immün yanıtı olduğu düşünülmektedir 6 . Epstein-Barr virüs, sitomegalovirüs, varisella zoster virüs, insan herpes virüs tip 6, HIV, yersinia enterokolitika ve toksoplazma gibi pek çok mikroorganizma suçlanmıştır [8][9][10][11][12][13] . Fakat bugüne kadar bu konuda kesin kanıt bulunamamıştır.…”

“…[7,8] The same conclusion is reached by Hollinsworth et al, [9] although in their study EBV DNA was detected by the polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization in 40% of the patients, with an additional 15% giving a weaker positive signal. Sumiyoshi et al [10] examined the cervical lymph nodes of 30 patients with KFD. The nodes of 16 of their patients showed amplified EBV DNA by PCR.…”

“…Other symptoms include fever, fatigue, malaise, headache, nausea, weight loss. Cutaneous rashes and bone marrow localization have been reported [26,27]. Laboratory tests reveal granulocytopenia with lymphocytosis in about 50% of cases and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate.…”
