Analysis of Historical Sources of Heavy Metals in Lake Taihu Based on the Positive Matrix Factorization Model

Abstract: Analysis of sediment grain sizes and heavy metal correlations in the western part of Lake Taihu shows that the grain size of the sediment is stable as a whole. With increasing depth, the grain size tends to decrease. Heavy metals such as Cr, Cd, Pd and Sr are strongly correlated and influence each other. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, this study classified the origin of heavy metals in the sediments of western Lake Taihu into three major categories: Agricultural, industrial and geogeni… Show more

“…However, in the 21st century the atmospheric heavy metals remained at a relatively high level and this status likely continued or may even have become worse in the following years until the government carried out new stricter management standards for the atmospheric environment. Lei et al [16,43,44,45] studied the historical changes of pollutant concentrations in the sediments of Eastern Taihu, Changjiang, and Liaodong Bay and considered that 2000 was the turning point of the environmental quality change. This trend is basically consistent with the results of this paper.…”

“…Factor 3 was mainly dominated by As. Many previous studies attributed the source of As to agricultural input [36,57], and considered that the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers leads to the enrichment of As [36]. However, the study area has been used as industrial land for more than 60 years, and most of the surrounding land was industrial land.…”

“…Wastewater discharges from industrial sources need to be monitored and prevented more effectively here (Wenchuan et al 2001). In addition, non-point source pollution arising from aquaculture and agriculture need to be paid attention to (Li et al 2018).…”
