Analysis of Horizontal Earth Pressure Acting on Box Culverts through Centrifuge Model Test

Abstract: Underground space is being utilized due to the saturation of surface ground. The box culvert, as a representative infrastructure that has moved underground, is installed to protect such fixtures as electricity and gas. Because buried box culverts are necessarily affected by soil, it is important to study the earth pressure according to soil type. Herein, the horizontal earth pressure of the buried box culvert was analyzed. Accordingly, a precisely simulated centrifuge model test was performed. Additionally, th… Show more

“…Some researchers experimentally examined the effect of earth pressure on box culverts and compared the results with existing theoretical models to offer design improvements [ 11 , 12 ]. Several academics have studied box culverts to understand the impact of soil-structure interaction on the performance of box culverts [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Moreover, the centrifuge model tests simulate slope failure, change retaining wall bearing pressure, and change soil-structure interactions to reproduce the actual ground stress conditions of BC [19,20]. According to the centrifuge model tests, Lee et al [21] study the seismic performance of road box culverts and summarize seismic evaluation method of road box culverts. However, the research on the flexural capacity of BC is relatively limited, which is also a significant point to reflect the working efficiency of BC.…”

“…However, this problem can be solved using the centrifugal model test. Lee et al [26] analyzed the horizontal earth pressure on a buried box culvert. The authors used centrifugal model tests to determine the earth pressure coefficient for sand with a single relative density.…”
