Analysis of laterally loaded piles with rectangular cross sections embedded in layered soil

Abstract: SUMMARYAn analysis is developed to determine the response of laterally loaded rectangular piles in layered elastic media. The differential equations governing the displacements of the pile-soil system are derived using variational principles. Closed-form solutions of pile deflection, the slope of the deflected curve, the bending moment and the shear force profiles can be obtained by this method for the entire pile length. The input parameters needed for the analysis are the pile geometry and the elastic consta… Show more

“…Figures show relationships between depth and pile deflection for three rectangular piles subjected to the lateral load in a four‐layered soil. The elastic properties and thicknesses of the soil layers and Young's modulus, length and dimensions of each pile used in the present method are same as those adopted by Basu and Salgado . In comparison with the results of FEA given by Basu and Salgado, the results obtained from the present method are in good agreement with the FEA results.…”

“…Let us consider a case history as an example of laterally loaded rectangular piles. Basu and Salgado presented FEA results of rectangular piles subjected to lateral loads. “…The behavior of single pile and pile groups subjected to lateral loading has been studied in details under static loading conditions using analytical approaches. Studies on vertically and laterally loaded piles embedded in nonhomogenous and layered soil using a Winkler model approach were studied by Basu and Salgado, Guo, and Hirai . Nevertheless, these methodologies did not take into account the presence of kinematic forces and depth of liquefiable soil layer and their influence on the bending moment generated in the pile and the unsupported pile length leading to instability.…”
