Summary Steam turbine cycle's low operating temperature makes it suitable for waste heat recovery applications. Even though conventional combined cycles, ie, topping gas turbine and bottoming steam turbine cycles, are thermodynamically efficient, they are not the most economical alternatives for power generation with capacities less than 50 MWe. A recently proposed alternative is to utilize a bottoming gas turbine cycle in form of an air bottoming cycle. In this study, an overview of air bottoming cycle is presented. Based on the discussed studies, it is decided to further evaluate the merits of water injection in the bottoming cycle air stream by using either a humidifier or an air saturator. Thermo‐economic analysis and optimization are performed to evaluate simple and water injected air bottoming cycles against steam bottoming cycles. Results indicate that conventional combined cycles can achieve the highest thermal efficiency of about 48%. While water injected air bottoming cycle with air saturator is the most cost effective combined cycle configuration and most efficient air bottoming cycle with levelized cost of electricity and energy efficiency of 64.41 US$/MWh and 39%–40%, respectively, followed by the water injected air bottoming cycle with humidifier and simple air bottoming cycle with reported levelized cost of electricity of 65.75 US$/MWh, 66.36 US$/MWh, respectively. Steam bottoming cycle has the highest levelized cost of electricity of 68.88 US$/MWh.

This paper presents a pioneering investigation into an integrated power generation cycle that combines gas turbines, steam turbines, Goswami cycles, biomass fuel, solar energy sources, and advanced Maisotsenko heat exchangers. Biomass gasification has been applied to partially fuel the gas turbine, while the M‐Cycle serves as the gas turbine inlet air cooling system. Solar parabolic collectors are utilized to elevate the compressed air temperature for combustion, and the Goswami cycle generates both power and cooling through waste heat recovery. This research addresses a critical gap by undertaking a holistic examination of the integrated power generation cycle, modelling the overall system performance by considering interactions and synergies between various components. The base model has been implemented, and the impacts of influential parameters on system efficiency, such as ambient temperature, seasonal variation, and steam‐to‐biomass ratio, have been taken into consideration. Remarkably, the incorporation of the M‐Cycle, solar parabolic systems, steam cycles, and the Goswami cycle into the base gas cycle results in substantial energy efficiency enhancements of 1.59%, 1.96%, 16.87%, and 6.06%, respectively, highlighting the transformative potential of this integrated approach for sustainable and efficient power generation.

This paper reports the Maisotsenko's cycle‐based waste heat recovery system with enhanced humidification to exploit the maximum waste heat recovery potential of the gas turbine. This research uses an integrated methodology coupling thermodynamic balances with heat transfer model of air saturator. The performance of the system is deduced which are assisted with sensitivity analysis indicating the optimal mass flow rate ratio (0.7–0.8) and pressure ratio (4.5–5.0) between the topping and bottoming cycles, and the air saturator split (extraction) ratio (0.5). The net‐work output, energy, and exergy efficiencies of the system are found to be ≈58.39 MW, ≈55.85%, and ≈52.79%, respectively. The maximum exergy destruction ratios are found as 68.2% for the combustion chamber, 16.0% for the topping turbine, 5.7% for topping compressor, 4.9% air saturator. The integration of Maisotsenko's cycle‐based waste heat recovery system with a comprehensive thermodynamic model, as demonstrated in this research, offers valuable insights into enhancing the efficiency, cost‐effectiveness, and environmental impact of gas turbines. By presenting fundamental equations related to thermodynamic balances, this work serves as an invaluable educational resource, equipping future researchers and students with the knowledge and skills needed to advance the study of thermodynamics and sustainable energy solutions.
