Analysis of Microbial Communities: An Emerging Tool in Forensic Sciences

Abstract: The objective of forensic sciences is to find clues in a crime scene in order to reconstruct the scenario. Classical samples include DNA or fingerprints, but both have inherent limitations and can be uninformative. Another type of sample has emerged recently in the form of the microbiome. Supported by the Human Microbiome Project, the characteristics of the microbial communities provide real potential in forensics. They are highly specific and can be used to differentiate and classify the originating body site… Show more

“…For example, some scholars assessed the method of narrowing down the search area and determining the origin of samples via microorganisms in the soil (Demanèche et al, 2017 ; Habtom et al, 2019 ). Some types of research analyzed the decomposition of microorganisms to estimate the PMI (Gouello et al, 2021 ). In addition, certain special samples have become the focus of scholars in their pursuit of breakthrough in the field of microbial forensics.…”

“…Proteomics can help narrow down infection causes and explain the entire spectacle of the gut flora in disease states and postmortem. Hence, metaproteomics and thanatoproteomics may be the key forensic research areas (9, 54, 67, 68).…”
