Analysis of molecular markers as predictive factors of lymph node involvement in breast carcinoma

Abstract: Abstract. Nodal status is the most significant independent prognostic factor in breast cancer. Identification of molecular markers would allow stratification of patients who require surgical assessment of lymph nodes from the large numbers of patients for whom this surgical procedure is unnecessary, thus leading to a more accurate prognosis. However, up to now, the reported studies are preliminary and controversial, and although hundreds of markers have been assessed, few of them have been used in clinical pra… Show more

“…These results need to be confirmed in a prospective study with a large cohort. More recently, Paula et al tried to identify prognostic markers in patients with pN0 and pN + BC ( 45 ) and found that the PIK3R5 gene was differentially expressed in these two groups. However, they did not assess the correlation with the patients’ outcome.…”

“…Microarray technology allows comprehensive analysis of gene expression profiles in different diseases, which has been demonstrated in a variety of hematological tumors and solid tumors including lung ( 6 ), liver ( 7 ), pancreas ( 8 ), and breast ( 9 ). Biomarkers discovered by microarrays have a great potential in the prediction of clinical outcomes and survival as well as classification in different sub-types ( 10 12 ).…”
