Analysis of multistep transformations in single-crystal NiTi

Abstract: The effects of composition and heat treatment on the thermally induced phase-transformation behavior of single-crystal NiTi with compositions of 50. 1, 50.4, 50.8, and 51.5 at. pct Ni are presented in this article. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments reveal that a heat-treated 50.1 at. pct Ni alloy exhibits an unprecedented multiple-step transformation (MST) on both heating and cooling, with up to four peaks. This behavior is absent in the higher-Ni-content alloys. In polycrystalline NiTi allo… Show more

“…The degree of vaporization, precipitate formation, grain size, and therefore the transformation temperatures will then depend on the distance from the center of the laser spot. A similar peak broadening phenomenon is observed in heat-treated NiTi with heterogeneous precipitation near grain boundaries 40 . In these cases, the transformation occurs over a very wide range with multiple distinct peaks that correspond to transformation in the grain interior and at the grain boundary 40, 41 .…”

“…A similar peak broadening phenomenon is observed in heat-treated NiTi with heterogeneous precipitation near grain boundaries 40 . In these cases, the transformation occurs over a very wide range with multiple distinct peaks that correspond to transformation in the grain interior and at the grain boundary 40, 41 . Compositional and microstructural differences also cause the peak widening in the 120 μm samples; however, the transformation peak is smooth because the heterogeneity in composition and microstructure is also smooth.…”

“…The results are shown for a cooling and heating cycle. Since both the transformation temperatures and the slip stresses in this alloy are high, these figures show excellent potential of NiTiHf 25 . The strains reported in Figs.…”

“…We assert that the slip resistance of the B2 NiTiHf alloys exceeds other SMA materials. For NiTiHf 13.3 and NiTiHf 25 , we indicate the tension and compression levels (tension versus compression denoted by -T versus -C respectively), as well as the potential range of slip resistance associated with thermomechanical treatments. The difference in tension and compression is primarily attributed to the transformation planes having low symmetry indices, i.e.…”
