Analysis of navigability of Web applications for improving blind usability

Abstract: Various accessibility activities are improving blind access to the increasingly indispensable WWW. These approaches use various metrics to measure the Web's accessibility. “Ease of navigation” (navigability) is one of the crucial factors for blind usability, especially for complicated webpages used in portals and online shopping sites. “…Although there is a significant increase in the awareness of Web accessibility [2], number of projects 8 , investigation of legal issues 9 and outreach of guidelines 10 , it is still difficult for visually disabled users to use the Web [10]. In fact, in a recent study, Takagi et al [28] conclude that "blind users took more than 10 times longer compared with sighted users when they purchase items on the Web". This is also consistent with the findings of Coyne and Nielson [6] and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) [7].…”

“…In papers such as [1,7] methods for automatic crawling of JavaScript reliant RIA's have been introduced. These methods have spawned a variety of applications to automate beneficial tasks such as indexing for search engines [1], accessibility and usability evaluation [6,16], automatic test generation [3,11,12,13], regression testing [4], and security testing [5] to mention some.…”
