Analysis of non-genetic factors affecting calving difficulty in the Czech Holstein population

Abstract: Fertility related traits as cost reducing factors are of increasing concern to Holstein breeders. Dystocia and stillbirth represent important economic costs either direct (loss of calf, death of dam, veterinary assistance and labour) or long-term (culling rate, milk yield and fertility) ones (Meijering, 1984). In spite of low heritability (Kemp et al., 1988 (Meijering, 1984). Adjustments for such non-genetic factors are made in genetic evaluations (Berger, 1994;McGuirk et al., 1999;Fuerst and Egger-Danner, 200… Show more

“…This result was comparable to other study reported (5.4%-10.8%) for the same breed [1,4,5,15,16,[38][39][40] . According to the classification tree technique, the most important variable affecting calving difficulty was the calf birth weight.…”

“…It is often problematic in non-living industrial or laboratory equipment, the more so in living animals and particularly in ruminants. Therefore it is necessary to pay great attention and time to steady state, and besides the steady state of feeding all other parameters including the body condition of animals Jílek et al, 2008), genetic and nongenetic factors (Fiedlerová et al, 2008) and others should be compared.…”

“…In Norway, deaths among calves and young stock have caused annual losses of up to $15 million for dairy farmers (Østerås et al, 2007). Consequently, dystocia and stillbirths represent significant economic losses (Fiedlerová et al, 2008;Mee, 2004).…”

“…Fiedlerová et al (2008) and Naazie et al (1989) used an analysis of variance (general linear model). Before that, Fiedlerová et al (2008) transformed a point-based scale of CE by means of their frequencies into a standardized normal distribution.…”
