Analysis of Nucleotide Alterations in the E6 Genomic Region of Human Papillomavirus Types 6 and 11 in Condyloma Acuminatum Samples from Brazil

Abstract: Condyloma acuminata (CA), or genital warts, are benign proliferative epidermal or mucous lesions that are caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), mainly the low-risk types 6 and 11. HPV variants are defined as viral sequences that share identity in the nucleotide sequence of the L1 gene greater than 98%. Based on this criterion, HPV6 and 11 variant lineages have been studied, and there are ongoing attempts to correlate these genetic variants with different clinical findings of infection. Therefore… Show more

“…For CA, the incubation period ranges from three weeks to eight months, whereas the average period is approximately three months [ 11 , 12 ]. The incidence of CA is mainly in young people aged 20 to 30 years [ 13 ]. During the onset of CA, most cases have no symptoms, and some cases can be accompanied by pain and ulcer bleeding and even cause genital cancer [ 14 ].…”

“…Among the 567 HPV-infected subjects, the single HPVtype infection was dominant (56.61%) and significantly higher than that of the double infection (26.63%) and multiple infection (16.75%). HPV6 and HPV11 were most common HPV subtypes.Although HPV6 and/or HPV11 are mostly latent infections in the genitalia and usually do not show clinical symptoms, these are the dominant genotypes that cause condyloma acuminata in countries around the world [10][11][12][13]. The high-risk subtypes of HPV play an important role in the development of penis cancer [11].…”

“…HPVs are present as small, nonenveloped and circular double-stranded DNA viruses with an icosahedral capsid, and consisting of an average genome length in 8,000 bp [19]. The whole genome can be broadly grouped into early regions, late regions and a long control region according to their different functions.…”
