Analysis of poly(ethylene glycol)‐diacrylate macromer polymerization within a multicomponent semi‐interpenetrating polymer network system

Abstract: Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) containing poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate (PEGdA) and modified gelatin were prepared with 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA) as a photoinitiator. The effect of (i) initiator and PEGdA concentration, and (ii) weight ratio and type of modified gelatin on the conversion of PEGdA functional end groups was monitored in situ using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR). Reaction induction time was dependent on DMPA concentration … Show more

“…17 PEGdA (600 Da) was then added to this mixture in a 4:6 gelatin:PEGdA weight ratio to form a 10 wt % solution. 24 Next, 20 mL of an initiator solution containing 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenyl-acetophenone (DMPA) (0.02 g DMPA in 0.5 g PEGdA) was added to the mixture and vortexed. This solution was made immediately prior to the surgery.…”

“…22,23 The following procedure for IPN synthesis is adapted from previously established procedures. 21,24 PEGylated-RGD-modified or unmodified gelatin was dissolved in deionized water at a concentration of 0.1 g/mL at 608C to make RGDmodified gelatin IPNs (RGD-IPNþKGF) and unmodified gelatin IPNs (unmod-IPN), respectively. KGF-1 (QED Bioscience, 90% purity) was added to the RGD-modified gelatin solution at a concentration of 3.3 ng/mL which has been shown to stimulate keratinocyte proliferation.…”

“…The IR spectra are normalized to the peak at 1726 cm −1 , corresponding to the acrylic carbonyl group; these carbonyl groups are largely unaffected during curing and their IR intensities should remain fixed. In contrast, the terminal CH=CH 2 bonds on the PEGDA monomers produce a peak at 1410 cm −1 [17][18][19][20]. A decrease in the intensity of the 1410 cm −1 peak when the sample is exposed to UV light indicates curing.…”

“…The following procedure for sIPN synthesis is adapted from previously established procedures [39,40]. Methoxy-PEGylated-modified, PEGylated-GGG-modified, PEGylated-RGDmodified, PEGylated-PHSRN-modified or unmodified gelatin was dissolved in deionized water at a concentration of 0.1 g ml −1 at 60°C to synthesize methoxy-PEG-modified gelatin sIPNs (mPEG-sIPN), PEGylated-GGG-modified gelatin sIPNs (GGG-sIPN), RGD-sIPN, PHSRN-sIPN, and unmodified gelatin sIPNs (Unmod-sIPN or mold-cast Unmod-sIPN), respectively.…”
