Analysis of residual stress in welding parts of cryogenic materials for LNG storage tank

Abstract: Research in LNG fueled ships are actively underway in the world. Accordingly, various materials were widely used as materials for storage tanks for ultra-low temperatures, and high manganese steel for ultra-low temperature was recently developed. In this paper, the transient thermal and residual stress analysis of the welding of 9% nickel steel and high manganese steel are presented. 9% nickel steel tended to have higher transverse direction stress and longitudinal direction stress than high manganese steel.

“…The high-Mn cryogenic steel in the fabrication of LNG tanks should be connected by welding, and submerged arc welding is one of the most widely used welding methods in high-Mn cryogenic steel [3]. There are strict requirements for the toughness of the weld metal to ensure the safe operation and service life of the LNG tanks under the cryogenic working environment [4,5].…”

“…The novel cryogenic high-Mn austenitic steel is a strong candidate due to its excellent cryogenic impact toughness and superior economic advantages for replacing conventional 9% Ni cryogenic steels, austenitic stainless steels and Invar alloys for the fabrication of LNG tanks [4, 5]. The cryogenic high-Mn steel for the construction of LNG tanks should be connected via welding, and the stringent impact toughness of the weld metal directly determines the safe operation and service life of the LNG tanks in the cryogenic working environment [6, 7].…”
