Analysis of scored and conceded goals by a football team throughout a season

Abstract: Network analysis can provide a new set of important information about players and teams’ behaviour throughout a match. Despite their pertinence, football analysis using network metrics is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the goals scored and goals conceded by a single team during a full season using network methods. Thirty-six games were analysed and from these the data about players’ connectivity in actions preceding 46 goals scored and 15 goals conceded were collected. The results sho… Show more

“…In this way, network analyses allow us to identify the location of players with values of density, total links and grouping coefficients between the connections made [ 34 ], the influence of ball possession [ 30 , 44 ], determining the center of mass of the team as a key player and the positional average of all players [ 26 ], establishing movement predictability, type of organization and dynamic assemblies based on the needs of the team’s tactical behavior, involving the shooting zones in relation to contextual variables within the offensive sequence to score a goal and explore goal opportunities [ 27 , 33 , 47 ].…”

“…One of the issues referred to by futsal coaches as important in the observation and analysis of a game is the detection of game patterns [2]. through the sequential analysis and the detection of t-patterns, it was possible to obtain pattern sequences related to tactical schemes [40], moments of special importance since they can surprise the opponent and change the outcome of the game [1,13]. We managed to find, through the sequential analysis carried out with SDIS-GSEQ ® , some regularities regarding this specific moment of the game; According to table 1, we can verify that the finalization of the tactical schemes happens preferably after first pass to zones 5, 8, and 9.…”
