Analysis of Shielding Effectiveness of Reinforced Concrete Against High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse

Abstract: This paper is focused on the analysis of the shielding properties of reinforced concrete under impinging highaltitude electromagnetic pulse. The reinforced concrete provides frequency-dependent shielding effectiveness mainly due to the embedded metallic grid rebars. For characterization of the concrete, three different configurations, i.e., concrete, rebar, and combined reinforced concrete, are analyzed in detail. In addition, the electromagnetic properties of concrete are quantitatively analyzed by its freque… Show more

“…Special attention has been given to reinforced concrete, a composite material that is widely used in modern constructions. It has been demonstrated that the grid-like shield formed by the reinforcing steel bars (rebars) embedded in concrete increases the through-wall attenuation of signals in the building [8]- [11] and enhances its shielding effectiveness against both High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) [12] and lightning electromagnetic fields [13]- [19].…”

“…Therefore, an electronic attack can affect the equipment in the electronic protection facilities, and various studies are being conducted to reduce them. To date, these facilities have added thicker barriers or shielding filters to meet the internal shielding standards [7]. High costs and space are required to make a shielding facility with a high shielding effect using this method.…”
