Analysis of Shooting Consistency in Archers: A Dynamic Time Warping Algorithm-Based Approach

Abstract: The shooting consistency of an archer is commonly perceived to be an important determinant of successful scores. Four (n = 4) elementary level archers from a middle school in Korea participated in this study. In order to quantify shooting consistency, movement of the bow forearm was measured with an inertia sensor during archery shooting. The shooting consistency was calculated and defined by the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm as the distance between two time sequences of acceleration data. Small distanc… Show more

“…Furthermore, another study explained that the shooting duration, from the holding phase to the release, between 1-3 seconds and 4-6 seconds had a significant effect on archery performance at a 30-meter distance. However, the 4-6 second shooting duration is better than the 1-3 second duration for archery achievement at a 30 meter distance [5].…”

“…In archery, the shooting consistency of an archery athlete is generally considered as an important determinant of a successful score [5]. If an archery athlete does not have a good shooting consistency, then the score obtained will not be optimal.…”

“…In the technique of football shooting, straightening the instep is the key, otherwise, there will be an ankle sprain. In ordinary football training, the coach may remind the instep to be kept straight, however, the instep of the player may be loose in training during the shooting action, and the coach cannot see with the naked eye whether the shooting action is done as per the standard or whether the player is loose [14]. Another action in the football shooting action is to bend the outside of the foot.…”

“…Consistency plays a vital role in many sports, especially in archery. In order to achieve successful archery performance, an archer must have consistent shooting abilities [1]. This is demonstrated by repeatedly shooting arrows at the same aiming point, resulting in a tight group of arrows hitting the target.…”
