Analysis of signal quality in FSO systems with PolSK modulation

Abstract: In this paper, the quality of the Polarization Shift Keying (PolSK) modulated signal in a Free Space Optical (FSO) system is analyzed. The atmospheric channel is statistically modeled with four different distributions, namely, the Gamma-Gamma distribution, Negative Exponential distribution, Kdistribution, and I-K distribution. For all four channel models, the Average Bit Error Rate (ABER) at the receiving side of the system is determined in an analytically closed form. The results are graphic… Show more

“…With regard to the analysis of the impact of PolSK modulation on FSO link performance, our results seem to converge with those already available in the literature. In [35], the authors show that FSO link performance is improved by the use of PolSK modulation. They show that PolSK modulation contributes significantly to improving the BER of the system.…”

“…This difference can be explained by the greater resistance of polarisation to the atmospheric characteristics of the environment. Polarisation allows the link to better resist phase noise and refraction phenomena induced by variations in the refractive index during propagation of the optical signal in the atmosphere [16,35]. However, for an efficient system, it is important to find an optimum compromise between the power required and the acceptable BER [16].…”

“…PAM is a modulation technique in which the amplitude of the carrier changes as the baseband signal changes. Moreover, atmospheric turbulence has little effect on the polarization degree and polarization state of the beam during long distance transmission [6][7]. Theoretically the crosstalk of orthogonal polarization can be ignored.…”

“…RoF system combines the merits with large capacity and high bandwidth in optical communication and high stability and anti-interference on microwave communication technology [8]. Hence, this system has become a promising alternative scheme in broadband wireless access systems in the future, and has attracted extensive attention from the academic community [9,10]. The polarization multiplexing system has simple structure, which can double the transmission capacity and increase the frequency spectrum utilization [11,12].…”
