Analysis of Soft Skills and Job Level with Data Science: A Case for Graduates of a Private University

Abstract: This study shows the significant features predicting graduates’ job levels, particularly high-level positions. Moreover, it shows that data science methodologies can accurately predict graduate outcomes. The dataset used to analyze graduate outcomes was derived from a private educational institution survey. The original dataset contains information on 17,898 graduates and approximately 148 features. Three machine learning algorithms, namely, decision trees, random forest, and gradient boosting, were used for d… Show more

“…Support vector machines have demonstrated their efficacy in domains like computer security, image categorization, and the extraction and recognition of soft biometrics [13]. Meanwhile, gradient boosting has found resounding success in a wide array of sectors, including finance [14] education [15], and the cryptocurrency realm [16], among countless others.…”

“…Over the years even though different conceptual frameworks for understanding 21st Century Skills have been used, there are some skills that are a constant part of this definition and they are: creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, information and process management, effective use of technology, career and life skills, and cultural awareness (Beers, 2011, cited in Cansoy, 2018). An OECD (2019) report and other studies (Feraco et al, 2022;Ferreira & Robertson, 2022;Ramos et al, 2023) stress how socio-emotional and cognitive skills like critical thinking and empathy, for example, will become key skills for the future while more technical skills will evolve. General findings in relation to studies on 21st Century skills will be discussed in the literature review section, with a particular focus on observations relevant to each of the partner countries in the project.…”
