“…This supports the contention that haematogenous spread via the iliac veins results in a higher incidence of lung metastases from rectal cancer. 13,14 By contrast, locoregional recurrence of rectal tumors was relatively uncommon and certainly no more frequent than colonic tumors. This is consistent with the modern use of surgical techniques to ensure a complete excision of the mesorectum selectively combined with the use of chemoradiotherapy that has dramatically reduced the rates of locoregional recurrence from rectal cancer.…”

“…This rate exceeds the approximate 10% rate typically reported in the literature. Given that patients with isolated lung metastases often experience excellent 5-year survival rates (27% to 41%), [8][9][10] we would recommend that patients undergo some manner of chest imaging as part of their postoperative surveillance approach. Whether annual CT of the chest is superior to a twice yearly CXR cannot be resolved at this juncture.…”

“…Liver is the commonest site of recurrence in people who undergo curative surgery for colorectal cancer [3, 4] and 20–32% of these metastatic deposits are respectable [46]. The 5-year survival after liver resection varies between 16% and 30% [5, 710].…”
