Analysis of Tetrahydrofuran and Methanol in Distillation Residue Samples by Automated Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction--Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detection

Abstract: Automated headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography and flame ionization detection is used to determine the amounts of methanol and tetrahydrofuran (THF) in distillation residue samples from a proprietary chemical reaction. A 65-micron polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene SPME fiber is used to perform the extractions. Optimized extraction conditions for each analyte are determined using a parts-per-million-level methanol in water standard and a parts-per-billion-level THF in w… Show more

“…Therefore, it is important to detect the concentration of THF vapor in air. Traditional techniques for detecting THF include gas chromatography, tandem mass spectrometry, etc., but the large size of the equipment and the complexity of sample preparation made these methods unable to meet modern sensing requirements. In recent years, sensors with ultra‐small sizes have gained advance rapidly, which are more appropriate for real‐time online detection.…”

“…However, in the production of acrylic acid and acrylate, distillation residue is often generated during rectification due to the unsaturated bonds in acrylic acid and acrylic ester (Pereira et al, ; Suresh & Jaikrishna, ). The harmful residue contains a large amount of complex organic pollutants such as acrylate polymers that cause environmental damage, and thus, effective methods should be implemented to properly dispose of acrylic acid production residue (Gavlick, ; Pereira et al, ).…”
