Analysis of the Effect of a Marine Energy Farm to Protect a Biosphere Reserve

Abstract: Abstract. Sacalin Peninsula in the Black Sea is a new land located south of the Saint George branch of the Danube. Since 1938 this area became a biosphere reserve since many rare species of animals and plants are to be found there. The generation of this new peninsula is due to the sedimentary process induced by the Danube River outflow and it was started more than 150 years ago. In the winter of 2013 this environment was seriously affected by some very strong storms putting in real danger this ecosystem. From… Show more

“…Since the main target of the present work is to study the variability of the wave flux in some hotspot areas of the Black Sea, its results also have some direct industrial applications related to the extraction of the marine energy especially. Furthermore, this extraction of the marine energy might have also useful applications as regards the coastal protection, which represents a very important environmental issue in the Black Sea (see for example [26][27][28]).…”

“…The shortest distance (15 km) from the shore to the area where the wave power is between 4000 kW/m and 4500 kW/m is in the southern area of the Romanian coast. The marine space analysis in the context of renewable energy in the Black Sea is considering different sea surfaces all located for MPAs/Protected Marine Areas, shipping lines, port lanes, as well as the prohibited area of extractive industry/areas of oil platforms (Rusu, 2016). The various maps were created using ArcMap tools.…”
