Analysis of the Essential Oils of Coriandrum sativum Using GC-MS Coupled with Chemometric Resolution Methods

Abstract: Coriandrum sativum L. (CSL), also called Chinese parsley in China, is a famous spice and is widely used in cooking due to its pleasant and delicate aroma. In China, CSL is not only an important spice in cuisine but is also a key traditional medicine. CSL is often used to treat headaches, measles, and rectal prolapse, and to prevent cancer.1) Numerous studies have been carried out regarding the chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of the essential oils of CSL fruits/seeds. “…In the HELP method, the resolution of a two-dimensional data set into chromatograms and spectra of pure chemical constituents is carried out via the so-called local full-rank resolution after the determination of zero component and selective region of the target component. The application procedures are omitted here, and the details are available elsewhere [11,12].…”

“…Fortunately, hyphenated instruments combined with chemometric resolution method (CRM) proved to be powerful to quantify the complicated system clearly and accurately. The heuristic evolving latent projections (HELP) method that was reported firstly in 1992 by Kvalheim and Liang [9,10] has been extensively applied in the resolution of partially overlapping peaks in the case of "first in, first out" [11,12], while the selective ion analysis (SIA) method based on the ion information has been successful to solve the embedded peaks [13]. The above methods are fast and easy to use and understand.…”

“…Previous studies reported that it has antiinflammatory potential in UV erythema and antioxidant effects in rats fed a high-fat diet [13,14] . Chemically, CS is known to contain large amounts of essential oils and fatty acids [15,16] . It also contains well-known antioxidants, such as caffeic acid, ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid [17] .…”
