Analysis of the Impact of Traffic Violation Monitoring on the Vehicle Speeds of Urban Main Road: Taking China as an Example

Abstract: In recent years, there are more and more applications of traffic violation monitoring in some countries. The present work aims to analyze the vehicle speeds nearby road traffic violation monitoring area on urban main roads and find out the impact of road traffic violation monitoring on the vehicle speeds. A representative urban main road section was selected and the traffic flow was recorded by camera method. The vehicle speeds before, within, and after the road traffic violation monitoring area were obtained … Show more

“…This may be explained as the weakness of enforcement using fix speed camera [ 37 ]. For experienced taxi drivers, they usually avoid punishment by slowing down near the camera and fiercely accelerate after the pass, which is known as "kangaroo effect" [ 38 , 39 ]. However, this phenomenon can be captured by processing GPS trajectory, and thus, identified more practical serious speeding on the downstream area of speed camera.…”

“…Therefore, in order to ensure the practicability of this study, the sunny day with better weather was selected for the experiment. During the experiment, the driver passed through the Jiaozhou Bay undersea tunnel at an ordinary speed of 70 km/h without changing lanes within the undersea tunnel [37]. When the driver sensed the critical points between the entrance and middle sections of the undersea tunnel and those between the middle and exit sections of the undersea tunnel, he/she reported them to the assistant experimenter, who was the copassenger, in real time.…”
