Analysis of the landscape complexity and heterogeneity of the Pantanal wetland

Abstract: This is the first report on analysis of habitat complexity and heterogeneity of the Pantanal wetland. The Pantanal encompasses a peculiar mosaic of environments, being important to evaluate and monitor this area concerning conservation of biodiversity. Our objective was to indirectly measure the habitat complexity and heterogeneity of the mosaic forming the sub-regions of the Pantanal, by means of remote sensing. We obtained free images of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from the sensor MODIS and… Show more

“…The Pantanal is one of the largest continental wetlands of the world and provides important ecosystem services such as water regulation, population well-being and the conservation of biodiversity (Brazil 2016). It encompasses complex regions that display environmental heterogeneity and is highly influenced by the local water regime (Junk & Da Silva 1996, Nunes da Cunha & Junk 2009, Miranda et al 2018, which is controlled by the flood pulse (Junk et al 1989). This ecosystem is threatened mainly by extensive agricultural activities, expansion of the hydroelectric sector and waterway transportation (Harris et al 2005, Da Silva et al 2015.…”

“…Differences in mean abundance values of size-based groups (small and medium) between study areas (Mun-ya-wana game reserve, mixed farms and communal lands) were tested using GLM with 3-level area covariate and binomial error distribution. The magnitude of patchiness in each area was ascertained by spatial-point pattern analysis of count data using Lloyd’s index of patchiness [ 62 ]. A Lloyd’s index of 1 indicates a random distribution, whilst one <1 suggests uniformity and >1 patchiness.…”

“…The landscape metric NDVI spatial , which estimates the spatial variability change of NDVI, was used in this study as a proxy for vegetation structure change. Vegetation heterogeneity change (i.e., vegetation horizontal structure change) can be quantified through NDVI texture analysis techniques (e.g., [79][80][81]), which measure the variability of pixel values in a given area [82]. A highly heterogeneous vegetation cover, either in terms of the spatial distribution of plants or plant species composition therefore presents a high variability in NDVI, whereas a homogeneous vegetation cover will present a low variability [82].…”
