Analysis of the nasal bone and nasal pyramid by three-dimensional computed tomography

Abstract: Evaluation of the nasal bone and nasal pyramid is essential for the correct osteotomy. The shape of the nasal bone and nasal pyramid of Korean subjects were analyzed using a three-dimensional computed tomography (CT). This study includes 75 patients who visited Inha University Hospital and got a three-dimensional CT from October 2005 to June 2006 (58 males, 17 females, mean age of 33.1 years). The thickness of the bone at the nasomaxillary suture as well as between the rhinion and nasomaxillary suture, on whic… Show more

“…A few studies have been published on race differences of the nasal bones and pyriform aperture. Lee et al measured the bone thickness at the sites of the lateral and intermediate osteotomy line and evaluated nasal bone shape in 75 Korean subjects by using 3D CT. 1 In this study, there was no significant difference in the thickness of the bone at the lateral and intermediate osteotomy point. Citardi et al measured the nasal bone thickness of 8 patients and found out that the lateral osteotomy thickness was 2.39 mm ¡ 0.68 mm and the intermediate osteotomy thickness was 1.8 mm ¡ 0.3 mm.…”

“…1 Choosing the appropriate size of osteotome pre-operatively or having the option to change it intraoperatively increases the success of the surgery. Furthermore, preoperative CT assessment of the bony nasal pyramid can be a valuable tool, providing satisfactory accuracy and reliability for planning craniomaxillofacial reconstructive procedures.…”

“…Suazo et al (2008a;2008b;2008c) reported a high number of false positives when assessing the performance of different indicators as a diagnostic test of dimorphism. Moreover, morphometric studies in piriform aperture in German and Korean populations showed the presence of sexual dimorphism in some of its dimensions (Hommerich & Riegel, 2002;Hwang et al, 2005;Lee et al, 2008). Race difference should be included in assessing the dimorphic characteristics of the piriform aperture.…”
