Analysis of the Prevalence and Risk Factors of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Using Novel Diagnostic Criteria

Li L1,
et al.

Abstract: Objective:The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and analyse its risk factors using the International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups' diagnostic criteria. Method: Pregnant women (n = 650) were selected for our study. The related risk factors of GDM were collected using a questionnaire. “…After screening for eligibility based on the title and abstract, 107 articles were selected; of these, 25 articles were included after screening the full text. The main reasons for inclusion in the full‐text selection are shown in Figure . The 25 articles that met the requirements and were eventually included in the study covered the prevalence of GDM in pregnant women in 21 regions of mainland China between 2010 and 2017, including 79,064 participants.…”

“…Additionally, our study observed a relatively high proportion of GDM diagnoses, amounting to 32.79%, which is consistent with various reported prevalence rates in different geographic regions of China. It is worth noting that another study, encompassing 690 Chinese pregnant women using the diagnostic criteria of IADPSG, also reported a GDM prevalence of 33.3% ( 55 ). The advanced age of the pregnant women in our study, with a mean age of 32.77 and 32.15 years, could potentially account for this higher prevalence.…”

“…80 Other studies have demonstrated that the incidence of GDM in Chinese mainland varies between 5.1% and 33.3%. 81,82 Advanced maternal age, overweight status, and family history of diabetes mellitus could significantly increase the prevalence of GDM with incidence of 26.7% (95% CI: 23.2-30.3%), 30.3% (95% CI: 25.9-34.7%), and 32.9% (95% CI: 27.5-38.4%), respectively. 80 Despite the most recent survey in Chinese mainland demonstrating an increasing trend of obesity, the prevalence of obesity is still significantly lower than that in Western populations, largely attributed to differences in dietary and lifestyle factors.…”
