Analysis of the spatial distribution of the ecological niche of the land snail Brephulopsis cylindrica (Stylommatophora, Enidae) in technosols

Abstract: The aim of our work is to describe the ecological niche of the land snail Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke, 1828) in terms of the edaphic properties and properties of the vegetation cover and to show the spatial features of the variation of the habitat preference index within the artificial soil body – technosols (soddy-lithogenic soils on loess-like clays) using the ecological niche factor analysis (ENFA). The research was carried out at the Research Centre of the Dnipro Agrarian and Economic University in Pokr… Show more

“…The spatial structure of xerophilous nonindigenous gastropods is similar to that observed in other parts of their ranges [Kramarenko et al, 2014;Zhukov et al, 2019]. Aggregated spatial distribution is one of the adaptations to the habitat of steppe biotopes under arid conditions.…”

“…There are several reasons for this type of spatial distribution. In populations of B. cylindrica and Vallonia pulchella (Müller, 1774), the heterogeneity in the composition of both soils and vegetation affect greatly the spatial structure of gastropod population [Kunakh et al, 2018;Zhukov et al, 2019]. The authors hypothesize that such site selectivity by snails may also reflect adaptation to arid climate.…”

“…The functional significance of the variability found in the shell shape variation in the Nassariid Buccinanops globulosus (Kiener, 1834) (Gastropoda) has been discussed in terms of the flexibility of developmental programmes for morphology as well as the evolution of phenotypic plasticity (Avaca et al, 2013). Land snails are an ideal model object for studying the processes of genetic intrapopulation fine-scale spatial differentiation and subdivision (Zhukov et al, 2019). Their population size are always large, but in space individuals are often distributed overcrowded, the migratory/invasive capacity is low, but passive dispersal (incl.…”

“…Reclamation enhances soil quality by improving physical and chemical properties, which helps in restoration of mine soils (Shrestha & Lal, 2008;Zhukov et al, 2016c). The considerable changes of the soil bulk density, soil porosity, and soil mass water content were revealed to be changed after a long time of vegetation restoration (Cao et al, 2015;Maltsev et al, 2017;Zhukov et al, 2019). After rehabilitation period the content of water available for plants was found to be favourable in reclaimed soils but less beneficial conditions of the soil were associated with air and water permeability (Kofodziej et al, 2016;Shcherbyna et al, 2017;Zhukov & Maslikova, 2018).…”
