The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of innovativeness and internal locus of control on agro-entrepreneurial intention as well as the mediating role of innovativeness on the relationship between internal locus of control and agro-entrepreneurial intention among secondary school students in Nigerian. Using structural equation model on 200 secondary school students in Sokoto state, we found that the agro-entrepreneurial aspirations of secondary school students are significantly related to one’s innovativeness, while internal locus of control has no significant effect. Also, internal locus of control significantly influences one’s innovativeness. Finally, innovativeness has a full mediating effect on the relationship between internal locus of control and agro-entrepreneurial intention. Thus, the Nigerian government and other government entities are reminded by this study of the importance of continuing to develop training programs and activities to support psychological traits in young agro-entrepreneurs. Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the livestock business operations and livestock entrepreneurship interest of youths, their perception of livestock agribusiness entrepreneurship as a source of income and livelihood, the influence on their choice of livestock agribusiness entrepreneurship as a livelihood and the constraints to their livestock agribusiness entrepreneurship livelihood decision making. Design/methodology/approach: Cross-sectional data were obtained from 779 youth livestock agribusiness entrepreneurs who were selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Findings: Youths positively perceived livestock entrepreneurship as a source of income and livelihood. To a great extent, their personal interest and passion was a major factor that influenced their choice of livestock agribusiness as career. The most serious constraints to livestock agribusiness career decision making among the youths was the inadequate finance and inaccessibility to fund. Research limitations/implications: The challenge of having limited access to data, time constraints and conflicts arising from some youth participants’ personal issues. Practical implications: This study will provide information to enable policy makers come up with policies that will address the food security needs of the country’s population. Originality/value: The information is required to close the gap in the literature and contributes to the body of understanding on youths’ agribusiness entrepreneurship activities. Despite the great potential of agribusiness that can lead to job creation employment and economic prosperity, the majority of the youths seem to have jettison the economic opportunities. Specifically, the study objectives are to ascertain the components that motivate Nigerian youths to set out into agribusiness in rural communities, examine the challenges of Nigerian youths’ employability skills in agribusiness of the rural communities in southwest Nigeria, and assess the mechanisms to confront the challenges being faced by Nigerian youths’ employability skills in agribusiness of the rural communities in southwest Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A questionnaire was used to collect adequate data from the target respondents (youths in agribusiness), with a sample size of 100. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted to sample the rural communities and the respondents. The study reveals that the inability to get a job pushed youths into agribusiness (71 per cent); lack of insurance policy towards agribusiness (88 per cent) and regular training towards incubation purposes is good leverage for youth employability (78 per cent). It, therefore, recommends that relevant stakeholders should further make agribusiness more lucrative by coming up with policies that will entice youths to venture into agribusiness. Also, relevant stakeholders should work towards the complete eradication of the impediments.
