Climate change (CC) and drought episode impacts linked with anthropogenic pressure have become an increasing concern for policy makers and water resources managers. The current research presents a comprehensive methodology but simple approach for predicting the annual streamflow alteration based on drought indices and hydrological alteration indicators. This has been achieved depending on the evaluation of drought severity and CC impacts during the human intervention periods to separate the influence of climatic abnormality and measure the hydrologic deviations as a result of streamflow regulation configurations. As a representative case study, the Lesser Zab River Basin in northern Iraq has been chosen. In order to analyse the natural flow regime, 34 hydrological years of streamflow prior to the main dam construction were assessed. The Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) method has been applied to quantify the hydrological alterations of various flow characteristics. In addition, an easy approach for hydrological drought prediction in relatively small basins grounded on meteorological parameters during the early months of the hydrological year has been presented. The prediction was accomplished by implementing the one-dimensional drought examination and the reconnaissance drought index (RDI) for evaluating the severity of meteorological drought. The proposed methodology is founded on linear regression relations connecting the RDI of 3, 6, and 12 months and the streamflow drought index (SDI). Abstract:Because of the high correlation between random variables of drought duration and severity, their joint distribution is difficult to obtain by traditional mathematical methods. However, the copula method has proved to be a useful tool for analyzing the frequency of drought duration and severity. Most studies have used different marginal distribution functions to fit the drought duration and severity distributions. This requires a great deal of contrast analysis, and sometimes two or more distributions fit the data well. Based on entropy theory, however, a unified probability distribution function is derived which reduces complex contrast analysis and improves the filtering distribution function. Based on monthly precipitation data at 162 stations in China for 1961-2015, the monthly standardized precipitation index was calculated and used to extract drought duration and severity. Then the entropy distribution was used to fit the distributions of drought duration and severity, and to establish the correspondence between them. The probabilities of the interval and return periods were then determined using the copula method. An analysis of the discrepancy between the conventional and entropy-based methods indicated that the entropy distribution showed a better fit than conventional methods for drought duration distribution, although no obvious difference was found in drought severity distribution. The entropy-based results were more consistent with the empirical data, whereas conventional methods showed apparent deviation in some drought types. Hence, the entropy-based method is proposed as an alternative method of deriving the marginal distributions of drought duration and severity, and for analyzing the interval probability and return period in China.

Drought vulnerability of agriculture is significant to economic development and sustainable food production. In this paper, we proposed a framework to evaluate the regional agricultural-eco environment in the face of drought caused by climate change. Based on a vulnerability scoping diagram (VSD) model, we built up a comprehensive system to evaluate the agricultural drought vulnerability of Yunnan Province in China. The model highlights the human-land relationship by considering both natural conditions and human activities. Twelve indicators were generated to construct three components of the model: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. During the construction of the VSD model, the entropy and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) comprehensive analysis method were adopted to generate the weights and to compute the composite index for each section. Furthermore, the factor analysis method was used to determine the dominant factors of different cities and the main indicators driving the system. The results indicated a spatial pattern that the vulnerability value was high on the eastern and western sides, but low in the middle of Yunnan Province. Most of the vulnerable regions were concentrated in remote areas. Indicators such as population density, irrigation level, annual average precipitation, cultivation land ratio, and difficulty of water supply were the main driving factors. This means that there is a deep connection between agricultural drought vulnerability and urbanization. The evaluation system developed during this research will provide guidance for drought mitigation in regions of complex terrain.
