Analysis on the effects of turbulent inflow conditions on spray primary atomization in the near-field by direct numerical simulation

Abstract: It is widely acknowledged that the development of sprays in the near-field is of primary importance for the spray formation downstream, as it affects both the spray angle, as well as the intact core length. In this frame, the present work aims to study the effects of turbulence inlet boundary condition on the spray formation by means of Direct Numerical Simulations on a real condition at low Reynolds number. To this extent, the code Paris-Simulator has been used, while a digital filter-based algorithm was used… Show more

“…The simulations presented in this paper use the Parallel Robust Interface Simulator (PARIS-Simulator Ling et al, 2015;Malan et al, 2018;Salvador et al, 2018), which is an in-home CFD code developed jointly at Institute ∂'Alembert, University of Notre-Dame and University of Bologna. PARIS-Simulator is a classical, MAC-type solver using uniform, cuboidal meshes.…”

“…Considering the technology of self-excited oscillation pulsed cavitation jet nozzle, the atomization process can be divided into the primary atomization and the secondary atomization. The primary atomization is the first disintegration of the coherent liquid into big droplets and ligaments near the outlet of nozzle, which strongly depends on the flow conditions inside the injection holes and the starting conditions for the spray breakup [13]. Tamaki et al [14] and Geng et al [15] pointed out that the cavitation effect and turbulence effect are the incentive of the primary atomization of the jet near the nozzle.…”
