In this study, the laser-induced thermal effect on the sensitivity of a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) tapered probe is analyzed. In the analysis, the thermal effect can be considered as an axial force and is dependent on the temperature distribution of the probe. The Rayleigh–Ritz method is used to determine the sensitivity of the probe. According to the analysis, the sensitivity of the first three vibration modes increases when the thermal effect is taken into account. When the contact stiffness is low, the thermal effect on the sensitivity of mode 1 is particularly significant. The sensitivity of mode 1 increases with increasing taper angle and coating thickness of the probe. In addition, the effect of a SNOM probe with three different coating materials, Al, Au, and Ag, on the sensitivity of mode 1 is studied. The result shows that the highest sensitivity is obtained for the probe with an Al coating, whereas it is the lowest with a Au coating.

A small piezoelectric stack motor designed for vacuum and micro-dust environment

With the development of moon exploration, higher requirements have been proposed for the adaptability of small motors under vacuum and micro-dust conditions. In this paper, a rotational motor based on piezoelectric stacks is proposed, which can be driven by a single-phase direct current with a simple drive circuit. The motor dimensions are 24 mm × 24 mm × 24 mm (length × width × height), and the mass is 11.4 g. In air environment, the maximum output rotational speed of the motor is 1372 rpm, and the maximum stall torque is 3.2 mN·m at 40 VDC and 5.93 kHz. An open-loop control system is established to drive the stepping motion of the motor, and the minimum stepping angle is measured as 0.122 mrad. An environmental experiment of the motor is conducted in a lunar simulator module, which can simulate a high vacuum (6.7 × 10-5 Pa) and micro-dust (average 75 μm) environment of the lunar surface. The result shows that the motor can work steadily in the vacuum and micro-dust environment with an average speed of 1723 rpm, which demonstrates its potential applications in the space environment.

The doubly clamped microelectromechanical system (MEMS) beam resonators exhibit extremely high sensitivity to tiny changes in the resonance frequency owing to their high quality (Q-) factors, even at room temperature. Such a sensitive frequency-shift scheme is very attractive for fast and highly sensitive terahertz (THz) detection. The MEMS resonator absorbs THz radiation and induces a temperature rise, leading to a shift in its resonance frequency. This frequency shift is proportional to the amount of THz radiation absorbed by the resonator and can be detected and quantified, thereby allowing the THz radiation to be measured. In this review, we present an overview of the THz bolometer based on the doubly clamped MEMS beam resonators in the aspects of working principle, readout, detection speed, sensitivity, and attempts at improving the performance. This allows one to have a comprehensive view of such a novel THz detector.
