Analytical Model for Passing Sight Distance Design Criteria of Two-Lane Roads in Sri Lanka

Abstract: For a safe overtaking manoeuvre on two-lane highways, drivers need a sufficient sight distance along the roadway, but it depends on the traffic environment. To provide an adequate Passing Sight Distance (PSD), a number of models have been proposed since the initial model introduced by American Association of State Highways and Transport Officials (AASHTO) in 1954. It is a current design practice in Sri Lanka as well, however, not validated for local traffic conditions. This paper will present an alternative PS… Show more

“…The transportation system is a form of interrelatedness between actors within its scope, such as users, goods, infrastructure and facilities, both natural and planned. This system means coordinating movement with components that use media in measurable transportation processes (Li et al, 2017;Mampearcachchi, and Masakorala, 2018;Rymarz et al, 2015;Stogios, 2018).…”

“…At any time of travelling, relative distance and speed must be measured and analysed. Mampearachchi et al, (2018) proposed a safe overtaking manoeuvre on two-lane highways, with a number of models. None of the preceding researches in the literature covered the movement of an autonomous vehicle in a longer period of time, which included various types of maneuvers, including cruise control; lane change and overtaking.…”
