Analyze the usage of urban greenways through social media images and computer vision

Abstract: Urban greenway is an emerging form of urban landscape offering multifaceted benefits to public health, economy, and ecology. However, the usage and user experiences of greenways are often challenging to measure because it is costly to survey such large areas. Based on the online postings from Instagram in 2017, this paper used Computer Vision (CV) technology to analyze and compare how the general public uses two typical greenway parks, The High Line in New York City and the Atlanta Beltline in Atlanta. “…On the other hand, if 3D water bodies are set in the roaming landscape scene, the number of faces in the FBX program is up to 3.5 million, exceeding the official threshold of Unity2019 (≤1.5 million). Most environmental elements we included were found to be important to user experiences in previous empirical studies [ 44 , 45 , 46 ]. In terms of the color of flower landscapes, the preliminary field study found that yellow, orange and yellow-green patches had better healing effects, which is consistent with the research results of Zhang et al (2021) on the effect of plant color on visual fatigue [ 47 ].…”

“…The analysis of all materials showed the positive result -a large number of visitors enjoying the services of the park's territories. The researchers made conclusions about the possibility of using artificial intelligence, as information from the Instagram network, in the study of topical issues, similar to this case [11]. Such studies of various aspects are being conducted in different countries.…”

“…Salas‐Olmedo et al (2018) investigated the digital track of urban tourists by exploring three data sources, Panoramio (sightseeing), Foursquare (consumption), and Twitter (being connected‐accommodation), to better recognize tourism activities in Madrid, Spain. Song, Ning, et al (2022) collected photos from Instagram and used computer vision (CV) technology to compare how people use two typical greenway parks, the High Line in New York City and the Atlanta Beltline in Atlanta, Georgia. Liu and Xiao (2021) took review data from the platform Dianping to estimate human interaction with urban parks in developing populated countries such as China.…”
