Analyzing Assisted Offloading of Cellular User Sessions onto D2D Links in Unlicensed Bands

Abstract: For the past years, the analysts have been predicting a tremendous and continuous increase in mobile traffic, causing much of industry and academia to seek out any and all methods to increase wireless network capacity. In this paper, we investigate one such method, cellular data offloading onto direct connections between proximate user devices, which has been shown to provide significant wireless capacity gains. To do so, we formulate a new system model that couples a cellular network in licensed bands and a d… Show more

“…Possible examples of practical applications of the proposed framework include: (i) a home networking scenario in which the radio links correspond to communicating devices (e.g., TVs, consoles, and laptops) coordinated by a Digital Home Manager, as considered in [26]; (ii) a small cell network in which some small cells opportunistically extend their capacity with additional channels coming from unlicensed bands, e.g., in Long Term Evolution -Unlicensed (LTE-U), as considered in [27]; (iii) a wireless network exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications between specific terminals making use of additional frequencies coming from, e.g., unlicensed bands, as in [28].…”

“…Since the cellular base station is involved in setting up the D2D communication sessions, it can control and lower inference to the cellular communication network. This scenario can be regarded as network assisted D2D communications [19], [20].…”

“…Different aspects of the out-of-band D2D communication are presented in [4,10,11]. In [4,10], the authors developed analytical model of the network unloading for different D2D scenarios using stochastic geometry.…”

“…In [4,10], the authors developed analytical model of the network unloading for different D2D scenarios using stochastic geometry. The authors estimated potential opportunities of the out-of-band D2D communication, using both the system level and the mathematical analysis.…”
