Analyzing Design Principles of Biophilic Neighborhoods

Abstract: In current century, cities face rapidly evolving challenges, including climate change, resource shortages, population growth and urbanization, and financial pressures. Biophilic urbanism is an emerging design principle capable of considering the multidimensional and interdependent complexities of urban systems and infrastructure, which through the use of natural design features, can meet society's inherent need for contact with nature, and assist efforts to respond to these growing challenges. The purpose of t… Show more

“…Edward Wilson introduced the biophilia hypothesis, and Stephen Kellert later applied it to discussions between urban theoreticians, architectures and researchers that work around green and sustainable cities (Asadzadeh and Ahmadchali, 2018). The theory of “biophilia” refers to the relationship between people and their natural surroundings.…”

“…In a study conducted by Asadzadeh and Ahmadchali [14] in 2018, the focus was on exploring the principles of biophilic elements for sustainability in neighborhoods. The study analyzed five criteria: biodiversity, biotechnology, probability, sense of fun, and mystery.…”

“…This approach has gained increasing attention as a means to address challenges such as population pressures, climate change, and resource scarcity. The study aimed to highlight the strategies for creating a biophilic city that complements or promotes urban greening, emphasizing the importance of integrating nature into urban environments [14].…”
