PurposeCross operation is a common operation method in the building construction process nowadays. Due to the crossover, each other's operations are disturbed, and risks also interact. This superimposed relationship of risks is worthy of attention. The study aims to develop a model for analyzing cross-working risks. This model can quantify the correlation of various risk factors.Design/methodology/approachThe concept of cross operation and the cross types involved are clarified. The risk factors were extracted from cross-operation accidents. The association rule mining (ARM) was used to analyze the results of various cross-types accidents. With the help of visualization tools, the intensity distribution and correlation path of the relationship between each factor were obtained. A complete cross-operation risk analysis model was established.FindingsThe application of ARM method proves that there are obvious risk correlation deviations in different types of cross operations. A high-frequency risk common to all cross operations is on-site safety inspection and process supervision, but the subsequent problems are different. Cutting off the high-lift risk chain timely according to the results obtained by ARM can reduce or eliminate the danger of high-frequency risk factors.Originality/valueThis is the first systematic analysis of cross-work risk in the construction. The study determined the priority of risk management. The results contribute to targeted cross-work control to reduce accidents caused by cross-work.

Modeling and Verification of the Length of the Entrance and Exit Sections of an Undersea Tunnel

At present, there is no standard or research to define the specific length of the entrance and exit sections of an undersea tunnel. In combination with the unique longitudinal slope of the undersea tunnel and the change in the illumination difference, the lengths of the lane change, transition and adaptation sections of the entrance and exit sections of the undersea tunnel were theoretically deduced, and a model for the entrance and exit sections lengths was established. Considering the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay undersea tunnel as an experimental subject, the accuracy of the model of the entrance and exit section lengths was verified using two methods. The results indicated that the lengths of the entrance and exit sections of undersea tunnels change with changes in the factors such as the illumination, vehicle speed, and slope. In the case of the Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay undersea tunnel, when the vehicle passes the undersea tunnel at a speed of 70 km/h on a sunny day, according to the studied model, the entrance and exit sections of the undersea tunnel are 146.7 m and 157.1 m long, respectively. The entrance and exit section lengths of the undersea tunnel, determined using test method 1 and test method 2 are 151.0m, 153.6m and 161.0m, 148.9m, respectively. The absolute errors between the results of the model and test method 1 and 2 are less than 10%. These findings indicate that the model for the entrance and exit section lengths of undersea tunnels is reasonably accurate.

Safety-oriented planning of expressway truck service areas based on driver demand

The rapid development of the economy has promoted the growth of freight transportation. The truck service areas on expressways, as the main places for truck drivers to rest, play an important role in ensuring the driving safety of trucks. If these service areas are constructed densely or provide a plentiful supply of parking areas, they are costly to construct. However, if the distance between two adjacent truck service areas is very large or the number of truck parking spaces in service areas is small, the supply will fail to meet the parking needs of truck drivers. In this situation, the continuous working time of truck drivers will be longer, and this is likely to cause driver fatigue and even traffic accidents. To address these issues, this paper established a non-linear optimization model for truck service area planning of expressways to optimize truck driving safety. An improved genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the model. A case study of a 215.5-kilometers-length section of the Guang-Kun expressway in China was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and algorithm. As validated by this specific case, the proposed model and solution algorithm can provide an optimal plan for the layout of truck service areas that meet the parking needs of truck drivers while minimizing the service loss rate. The research results of this paper can contribute to the construction of truck service areas and the parking management of trucks on expressways.
