Analyzing farming systems diversity: a case study in south-western France

Abstract: The huge changes in agricultural activities, which may be amplified by the forthcoming Common Agriculture Policy reform, call the future of crop-livestock systems into question and hence the impact of these changes on landscapes and biodiversity. We analyzed relationships between agriculture, landscape and biodiversity in south-western France. The study area covered about 4,000 ha and included four villages. We conducted a survey of 56 farms. Multivariate analysis (multiple factor analysis and cluster analysis… Show more

“…MFA provides a special concept of partial factor scores which enables us to position each observation from the perspective of the different groups of variables. MFA has recently been used in various scientific areas such as agriculture [83], statistics [84], chemometrics [85], health and medicine [86], and psychology [87]. MFA is a descriptive technique but also provides the factor scores on both dimensions (by Countries and by Sectors) which were used in further statistical analysis, such as the ANalysis of Variance/ANOVA/.…”

“…In the Mediterranean basin, suckler cows farming have traditionally been related to grazing, in regards to the increased exploitation of non-cultivated agricultural areas (Ligios et al 2005). In some cases, the extensive suckler cows farming systems show a higher level of viability than the more intensive ones (Garc ıa-Mart ınez et al 2009;Choisi et al 2012). However, despite the positive aspects of grazing, they tend to become more intensified (Ruiz et al 2008) due to the modernisation and intensification of agriculture and the abandonment of livestock farming in remote rural mountainous areas (Bernu es et al 2011).…”

“…Within Eastern Europe difference in farm structures' development are caused by the initial conditions that are linked to the agricultural history during the previous communist system and later to institutional and policy reforms during transition. In Western Europe they are caused by the long-term institutional and policy evolutionary factors and market conditions (Serra et al, 2005;Choisis et al, 2012). During the communist system Hungarian agriculture was collectivized and the average farm size has been amongst the largest in Europe.…”
