Analyzing Precision Agriculture Adoption across the Globe: A Systematic Review of Scholarship from 1999–2020

Abstract: Precision agriculture (PA) is a holistic, sustainable, innovative systems approach that assists farmers in production management. Adopting PA could improve sustainable food security and community economic sustainability. Developing an understanding of PA adoption attributes is needed in order to assist extension practitioners to promote adoption and better understand the innovation adoption phenomena. A systematic review of literature was conducted to investigate attributes that foster PA adoption. Thirty-thre… Show more

“…Researchers are able to expand our existing knowledge by conducting an extensive literature review (Wright et al, 2007). A systematic review is a comprehensive review of existing literature to synthesize findings regarding the research question by following specific guidelines (Lee et al, 2021;Vindrola-Padros et al, 2021). The five steps to successfully complete a systematic review are: frame the question, identify relevant publications, assess study quality, summarize the evidence, and interpret findings (Khan et al, 2003).…”

“…Several barriers exist to adopting precision agriculture technologies, aside from broadband access. These include technical issues for the equipment itself, disconnect or lack of compatibility between the precision agriculture equipment and the farm operation, concerns regarding the misuse of agricultural data, managing the large amounts of data precision agriculture provides, lack of user-friendly designs and interfaces, and high costs of implementation [56]. Hence, we propose the following hypothesis: Hypotheses 3 (H3).…”

“…According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), maize, wheat, and other major crops have experienced significant yield reductions at the global level of 40 megatons per year between 1981 and 2002 due to a warmer climate (Liu et al 2021a(Liu et al , 2021b. SDG 11 indicates that by 2030, substantially decrease the direct economic losses relative to global gross domestic product caused by disasters (Lee et al 2021). From viewpoint of sustainable development, a negative growth of agricultural water use is necessary for sustainable agricultural development.…”
