Analyzing test structure by multidimensional scaling.

Abstract: Multidimensional scaling was used to analyze item response data for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to uncover the dimensions underlying the test. Four dimensions were identified for samples varying in native language and level of English proficiency: 3 corresponded to the test's sections and 1 was an end-of-test phenomenon. Dimensions were predominantly defined by easy items and were most important for low-scoring examinees. The dimensions' importance did not differ across language groups, e… Show more

“…Interestingly, the nature and number of regions that emerged from the MDS analysis were highly comparable to those of the initial applicant reaction model. In addition to the MDS analysis, we also applied additive tree modeling as an extra check of the demarcation of the resulting MDS regions (Oltman, Stricker, & Barrows, 1990). Additive tree modeling supported the MDS solution very well, strengthening the validity of MDS findings.…”

“…Ward's method (Aldenderfer & Blashfield, 1984) was used on the item coordinates, because of its use in the literature (Oltman, Stricker, & Barrows, 1990;Sireci & Geisinger, 1992) and because of its demonstrated ability to recover structure (Milligan & Cooper, 1987). In addition, discriminant analysis was used to predict group membership of the items from the stimulus solution to determined how well the values from the stimulus coordinates would classify the 32 SAT items with respect to the original test specifications.…”
