Analyzing the Relationship Between Burnout and Depression in Junior Elite Athletes

Abstract: Findings on burnout and depression in athletes highlight their potential severity. Although both constructs are discussed in similar, stress-based concepts, it is unclear how they relate to each other. To address this issue, we conducted a crosssectional multiple linear regression analysis (MLR; N = 194) and a longitudinal analysis of a three-wave cross-lagged panel (CLP; n = 92) in German junior elite athletes. MLR showed that depression and burnout were both associated with chronic stress. Stress was a signi… Show more

“…The purpose of this study was to compare psychological constructs that could influence the athletic performance of student-athletes competing in a national tournament in Mexico. The results support the existing research in influential variables and those related to burnout (Chen, 2013;Chen & Kee, 2008;De Francisco, Arce, Vílchez & Vales, 2016;Dubuc-Charbonneau & Durand-Bush, 2015;Frank, Nixdorf & Beckmann, 2017;Gabana, Steinfeldt, Wong & Chung, 2017;Grobbelaar, Malan, Steyn & Ellis, 2011).…”

“…There is evidence suggesting a correlation between burnout and depression (De Francisco et al, 2016;Dubuc-Charbonneau & Durand-Bush, 2015;Frank et al, 2017;Grobbelaar et al, 2011). There may be a clear association between the different burnout subscales and depression.…”

“…Thus far, only some studies clearly address both concepts (e.g., De Francisco et al, 2016;Frank et al, 2017;Gerber et al, 2018a;Smith et al, 2018). These studies point out that, while symptoms of both may overlap, both syndromes only have little relation over time and the two concepts are not interchangeable (Frank et al, 2017).…”

These studies point out that, while symptoms of both may overlap, both syndromes only have little relation over time and the two concepts are not interchangeable (Frank et al, 2017). However, both constructs can be regarded from a stress perspective (De Francisco et al, 2016) and share to some degree stress-related prospective features (Gerber et al, 2018a).…”

“…However, the temporality of the relationship is still a topic of debate as there has not been any established direction. For instance, Frank et al in 2017 described a bidirectional relationship in junior elite athletes 41…”
