Analyzing Twitter Users' Behavior Before and After Contact by the Russia's Internet Research Agency

Abstract: Social media platforms have been exploited to conduct election interference in recent years. In particular, the Russian-backed Internet Research Agency (IRA) has been identified as a key source of misinformation spread on Twitter prior to the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The goal of this research is to understand whether general Twitter users changed their behavior in the year following first contact from an IRA account. “…Since the Twitter API only allows collecting tweets posted in the last ∼ 7 days, we used the Twint library 4 to collect old tweets. The Twint library has been used by several prior works for collecting older tweets (Dutta et al 2021;Punuru et al 2020;Nuzhath et al 2020). We used this library to collect a total of 15.7 million English tweets from 4 million distinct users over the duration January 2018 -March 2021.…”

“…Since the Twitter API does not allow access to tweets older than ∼ 7 days, we needed to use some library like Twint to collect older tweets, as has been done by several prior longitudinal studies (Dutta et al 2021;Punuru et al 2020;Nuzhath et al 2020). Also, many prior studies have been based on the 10% and even the 1% Twitter random sample (provided by Twitter).…”

“…We performed a basic exploratory analysis of the preferences and justification to uncover the aspects in which the enhanced warning tags fair well (or vice versa) as a usable security nudges against misinformation. For each of the justifications in the open-ended questions we performed a sentiment analysis using the Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) [14,31,35]. VADER yields a compound score between -1 for a very negative piece of text, and 1 for a very positive one.…”

“…If other studies use many techniques of method. Examples are found in research [16] by U. Dutta identified only based on the dataset used, it means the research did not use any method or algorithm. However, this takes a long time because the grouping process is done manually, so this method is not efficient.…”
