Anaplastic oligodendroglioma with leptomeningeal dissemination in a french bulldog

Abstract: A 2.5-year-old male French Bulldog was evaluated for seizures. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested a glioma in the left piriform area. Radiation therapy (RT) and continuous chemotherapy were administered. Although the lesion had regressed significantly 2 months after RT, a follow-up MRI revealed meningeal enhancement in the left piriform area, which expanded further, with hydrocephalus, by day 310 (8 months after RT). Because of the poor prognosis, the dog was euthanized on day 356 and necropsy … Show more

“…They are commonly gelatinous owing to a high level of mucin production. They can be found intraventricularly, multifocally within the central nervous system, or diffusely in the leptomeninges as either a primary mass or metastatic spread (7779). Astrocytomas tend to be similar in color to the adjacent neuroparenchyma and often blend with the adjacent parenchyma without obvious mass formation (78).…”

“…An increasing metastatic caseload was similarly observed in people ( 5 ). Two canine case reports describe oligodendroglioma disseminating via the CSF, a process known as “CSF drop metastasis ( 6 , 7 ).” Such metastasis often occurs in a caudal direction, in accordance with CSF flow. In both dogs, a solitary forebrain mass was initially treated with radiation.…”

“…In both dogs, a solitary forebrain mass was initially treated with radiation. After treatment, sequential metastatic lesions were seen on follow-up MRI, first more caudally within the brain and then in the cervical spinal cord ( 6 , 7 ). Neurological deficits can progress from focal and forebrain to vestibular, cervical, or multifocal ( 6 , 7 ).…”
