This article examines the ongoing critiques and debates around the 'participatory turn' in development theory and practice and suggests anarchism as a practice-oriented theoretical framework for engaging with what participatory development ought to achieve. Explicit links are constructed between key terms in these development debates and anarchist political philosophy, and a call is made for greater attention to anarchism as a theoretical framework for radical and transformative development practice. This article then analyses empirical experiences of 'anarchistic partnerships' between development experts and grassroots peasant-indigenous organizations in north-west Argentina, who, although not self-identifying as anarchist, adhere to ideals such as horizontal prefigurative politics and radical democracy that are effectively anarchist in their orientation. These experiences challenge the NGO-social movement divide and offer a virtually unexplored form of radical development practice that is worthy of further academic attention. Thus, while this article is concerned with familiar debates in development studies, it offers some preliminary directions for advancing theoretical and practical knowledge regarding transformative participation.

Anarchism is a philosophy opposed to hierarchy and authority, and is used as a critical lens to analyze the whole of human society. As with members of all social groupings, anarchists differ from each other in many ways, one of which is their political ideology. At least two visibly distinct ideological variants of anarchism are distinguishable in the US-a red anarchism that emphasizes economic concerns and a green anarchism that focuses upon the environment. American anarchists have long assumed, based upon anecdotal evidence, that there are differences in ideological variant identification between those on the two US coasts. Using survey data, two distinct measures of ideology were formed and respondents were classified into four separate US regions. Although the majority of anarchists do not specify a particular orientation, Northeasterners were associated with red anarchism, while Westerners were associated with green anarchism. These differences may be created and/or reinforced by structural or organizational factors.

Pierre-Joseph Proudhon est demeuré célèbre pour son cri, « La propriété, c’est le vol ! » Pourtant, le « père de l’anarchisme » ne promeut pas son abolition. À la même époque, Joseph Déjacque, un autre anarchiste, critique vertement Proudhon pour son refus d’abolir la propriété afin de passer au communisme libertaire. Cet article analyse les pensées de ces deux auteurs au sujet de la propriété en les comparant l’une à l’autre afin d’identifier la cause de leur désaccord.Pierre-Joseph Proudhon is still famous for his outcry, “Property is theft!” Yet, the “father of anarchism” does not promote its abolition. At the same epoch, Joseph Déjacque, another anarchist, harshly criticizes Proudhon for his refusal to abolish property and to move to libertarian communism. This paper analyzes the thoughts about property of these two authors, comparing them in order to identify the cause of their disagreement
