Anastomotic aneurysms- 20-years of experience from one center

Abstract: Anastomotic aneurysms may develop after any type of vascular surgery, in different areas of the arterial system, and require reoperation. The frequency of occurrence of the above-mentioned is estimated at 1-5%. material and methods. During the period between 1989 and 2010, 180 patients with 230 anastomotic aneurysms were subject to surgical intervention at the Department of General and Thoracic Surgery, Warsaw Medical University. The study group comprised 21 (11.7%) female and 159 (88.3%) male patients, aged b… Show more

“…In the field of cardiovascular surgery, there are several reports on anastomotic aneurysms occurring after bypass surgery using radial artery or blood vessel prosthesis. 4 , 5) The frequency of an anastomotic aneurysm is estimated to be approximately 1–5%. Although the underlying mechanism leading to an anastomotic aneurysm is currently unclear, it is believed to be due to infection, intimal injury, hypertension and mechanical stress.…”

“…Etiologic considerations of para-anastomotic aneurysms include prosthetic graft infection, an ongoing previous dilatation process [11] or peripheral occlusive disorders [12] . In our case, the prosthetic graft was sterile and taking information from previous imaging studies, most importantly, the ones done for preparation of the femoro-popliteal bypass surgery, no evidence of an aneurysmal process had been shown.…”
