Anatomic characteristics of the dural sheath of the trigeminal nerve

Abstract: The cribriform area of Meckel's cave, which divides the dural sheath of the trigeminal nerve into 2 distinct compartments, may play an important role in tumor growth and surgical planning. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: E185-E188, 2016.

“…8,11,18,26 Hence knowledge of the anatomical characteristics of both the dural entrance to Meckel's cave and the dural sheath of the trigeminal nerve are important from a clinical point of view. 18,[26][27][28] Ossification of the tentorium cerebelli over the trigeminal notch (ossification of the pPCL) should be taken into account during surgical decompression of the trigeminal nerve. 11,18 The oculomotor triangle is a space formed by the pPCL, together with some other structures, that exposes the distal intracavernous carotid artery; it is an important access corridor to the medial compartment of the cavernous sinus and for approaches to the interpeduncular fossa.…”

“…MC is formed by continuous dura mater, which isolates its contents from the middle cranial fossa below and the temporal lobe above. 11,13,14 The dural sheaths cover the 3 major divisions of the trigeminal nerves and extend far beyond the points that the divisions join the ganglion. For the mandibular branch, the dural sheath leaves the middle fossa through foramen ovale and fuses with the epineurium extracranially (Fig.…”
